Classical Music Appreciation Program
Last year, the Foundation was honored to award a number of grants for truly innovative programs and projects within the Whitman Hanson Regional School District.
Among these grants was funding for a classical music appreciation program at the Duval School. Duval Elementary School teachers, led by grant applicant Holly Schjolden, were awarded money to a classical music appreciation program.
Teacher Holly Schjolden explains: “Our classical music initiative began after Mrs. Botelho-Hoeg , principal at the Duval School, became the PopSearch winner in 2005, and everyone at Duval became more aware of the Boston Pops and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.” With funding from the Whitman Hanson Education Association, the Duval School was able to purchase classical music CDs, including Classics For Kids and the Bowmar Orchestral Library.
Children are also introduced to classical artists as they enter the school each morning, as well as in the cafetorium during the first graders’ lunch. A poster on each classroom wall tells the children the name of the composer whose music is being played. Schjolden notes: “We have even received reports from adults that some of the students have favorite composers!”
